Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them—and when they do, Straven Family Dentistry is here to help. Whether you’re dealing with a sudden toothache, chipped tooth, or dental trauma, our experienced team provides prompt, compassionate care to relieve pain and protect your smile.

We understand that dental emergencies are stressful, and our goal is to make you feel at ease from the moment you call. Same-day appointments are often available so you can get the care you need—when you need it most.

A dental emergency is any issue that requires immediate attention to relieve pain, stop bleeding, prevent infection, or save a tooth.

Common emergencies we treat include:

  • Sudden, severe tooth pain
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
  • Knocked-out (avulsed) teeth
  • Loose adult teeth
  • Swollen gums or facial swelling
  • Dental abscesses or infections
  • Lost fillings or crowns
  • Bleeding that won’t stop

Not sure if it’s an emergency? Call us and we’ll help you determine the best next step.

When you arrive, we’ll quickly evaluate the issue, relieve your pain, and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Depending on the situation, we may:

  • Restore a damaged tooth with a tooth-colored filling or crown
  • Prescribe antibiotics for infection
  • Provide temporary or permanent tooth replacement options, such as dental implants or dentures
  • Offer protective devices like night guards if your emergency was caused by clenching or grinding

Whether you’re visiting for a routine check-up or addressing specific concerns, our friendly team ensures you feel comfortable and well cared for every step of the way.

While not all dental emergencies are avoidable, many can be prevented with routine checkups and early treatment. Our general and preventative dentistry services help identify potential problems before they escalate.

We also recommend wearing custom mouthguards during sports and night guards if you clench or grind your teeth—both available right here in our office.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

  1. Call our office immediately. We’ll guide you through first-aid steps and get you in as soon as possible.
  2. Manage pain or swelling. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek and take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed.
  3. Preserve the tooth if knocked out. Gently rinse the tooth and keep it moist (in milk or your mouth). Time is critical—come see us right away.

Call our office and follow the voicemail instructions. We do our best to accommodate urgent needs quickly.

Pain that is sudden, intense, or worsens over time should be evaluated right away—especially if it’s accompanied by swelling or fever.

We recommend calling ahead so we can prepare for your arrival. Same-day emergency appointments are often available.
